Thursdays Child: Eco-Social Justice and Community Advocacy

At Thursdays Child Holistic Counseling, we are committed not only to individual healing and empowerment, but also to the broader vision of social justice, human rights, and the interconnectedness of all sentient beings within our shared ecological systems.

We believe that true wellness can only be achieved when we address both individual and collective needs within the context of larger systemic and societal structures. This commitment extends beyond the therapy room into active advocacy, where we champion the rights and dignity of marginalized communities, as well as the protection of the environment.

Our Eco-Social Justice Mission

Eco-Social Justice at Thursdays Child is based on the idea that social justice, environmental sustainability, and human rights are inseparable. We work to create systemic change, elevate the voices of the oppressed, and advocate for policies and practices that promote the well-being of all individuals and communities, as well as the natural world.

This involves a commitment to fighting for:

  • Human Rights: Advocating for the rights and dignity of all people, particularly marginalized and oppressed groups, such as our fist nations communities, immigrants, refugees, and those living in poverty.

  • Environmental Justice: Recognizing the disproportionate impact that developmental environmental degradation and mining practices has on vulnerable communities, particularly low-income communities and Indigenous communities, we work toward promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship. We advocate for equitable access to clean air, water, and land, and support movements that address environmental harm and inequality.

  • Animal Rights: Understanding the intrinsic connection between human health and the welfare of all sentient beings, we promote the ethical treatment of animals and advocate for their protection within our collective ecosystems. We recognize that human well-being is deeply tied to the well-being of animals, plants, and the entire web of life.

  • Collective Ecosystem Health: We emphasize the importance of nurturing ecosystems that include humans, animals, plants, and the earth itself. We aim to build communities that honour this interconnectedness and work together for a future where all living beings can thrive.

Our Approach to Advocacy

At Thursdays Child, our approach to eco-social justice involves both therapeutic and community-driven advocacy. We believe in the power of collective action, recognizing that systemic change is vital to supporting individual and community well-being.

We work to:

  • Raise Awareness: Through digital education, workshops, and community outreach, we raise awareness about the social, economic, and environmental issues that affect marginalized groups and ecosystems. We work to bring these issues into public discourse, helping to shift societal values toward justice, equity, and sustainability.

  • Amplify Marginalized Voices: We are deeply committed to elevating the voices of those who are often silenced—whether they are individuals or entire communities. We listen to, amplify, and support the efforts of marginalized groups fighting for their rights, whether they are advocating for racial justice, economic equity, environmental protection, or animal rights.

  • Advocate for Policy Change: Our commitment to justice extends into the realm of policy and legislation. We advocate for changes in laws, policies, and systems that perpetuate injustice, inequality, and environmental degradation. This includes supporting efforts to address environmental destruction through mining and development, fighting for economic policies that protect the most vulnerable, and pushing for changes in systems of law enforcement and criminal justice.

  • Community Empowerment: By providing resources, education, and direct support, we empower communities to advocate for their own needs. Whether it's through providing mental health services, offering a platform for social justice movements, or partnering with grassroots organizations, we believe that the work of healing extends beyond individual therapy into collective, community-driven healing.

  • Eco-Justice Intersectionality: We believe in an intersectional approach to justice that recognizes the ways in which race, class, gender, sexuality, and other identities overlap with environmental issues. The impacts of social inequality and environmental destruction are felt most acutely by those who are already marginalized. Our work integrates this intersectionality to ensure that no group or individual is left behind in the fight for a just and sustainable world.

Integrating Eco-Social Justice into Therapy

At the individual level, we incorporate eco-social justice principles into our therapeutic practice by helping clients understand their own identities within the broader context of systemic and environmental forces. We work with clients to:

  • Understand Their Social Context: Recognizing that personal struggles often exist within broader societal and systemic issues, we help clients identify how social, political, and environmental factors may be affecting their mental health and well-being. This can include exploring how oppression, marginalization, or environmental stressors (like climate anxiety or eco-grief) impact their lives.

  • Develop Empowerment Strategies: We help clients connect with their inner strengths and community resources to advocate for themselves and their communities. This may involve engaging in local activism, participating in community organizing, or learning how to use their voice in social and political spheres.

  • Holistic Healing: Recognizing that true healing includes the whole person, we integrate eco-psychology principles into our work. This can mean using nature-based therapies or incorporating discussions of environmental impact and ecological sustainability into therapy sessions. We support clients in reconnecting with the earth and adopting practices that nurture their mental, emotional, and ecological health.

Social Justice Advocacy in Practice: As part of our therapeutic process, we work with clients who may be involved in social justice work or advocacy to help them navigate the emotional challenges that can arise in fighting for justice. This includes addressing activist burnout, dealing with compassion fatigue, and building resilience in the face of systemic injustice.

Building an Eco-Socially Just Future Together

At Thursdays Child Holistic Counseling, we recognize that personal healing and societal transformation are deeply intertwined. Our work within the eco-social justice space aims to challenge the status quo and fight for a world where human rights, animal rights, environmental sustainability, and social equity are fundamental. We are committed to a collective vision where all sentient beings can live with dignity, respect, and in harmony with the ecosystems that sustain us.

Our advocacy efforts extend into every aspect of our practice, from individual therapy to community outreach, and we invite our clients and the communities we serve to join us in this important work. By addressing both the internal and external factors that contribute to suffering, we work together to create systemic change, support healing, and build a just, sustainable future for all.
