   Art Therapy Social Work Supports

Art therapy is a recognised therapeutic modality grounded in psychology utilizing psychodynamic approaches and other psychological frameworks.

Thursdays child delivers art therapy through a practical, strengths-based framework. art therapy is particularly well suited to individuals who may not respond to more conventional, talk-based therapies.

This approach is non-confrontational, gentle, and paced, allowing participants to engage at their own comfort level. Often described as a “slow burn” therapeutic process, it supports meaningful change over time, with significant outcomes that are transferable from the therapy space into everyday home and community life.

Art therapy is a mental health profession that combines creative expression with psychotherapy, requiring practitioners to be trained in psychological theory, counseling techniques, and ethics.

How Art Therapy Supports NDIS Goals

  • Builds emotional awareness and regulation through creative expression, without relying on verbal processing alone

  • Supports communication skills by offering alternative ways to express thoughts, feelings, and experiences

  • Encourages social participation through shared creative activities and group engagement

  • Develops confidence and self-identity by recognising strengths and personal achievements

  • Enhances daily living skills such as focus, routine, planning, and task completion

  • Improves fine motor skills and coordination through hands-on creative activities

  • Provides sensory regulation and calming strategies that can transfer into everyday environments

  • Supports goal setting, and reflection in a visual and engaging way

  • Creates opportunities for connection with community and environment (e.g. nature-based and group activities)

  What Makes This Approach Different

  • Grounded in social work practice, focusing on real-life outcomes rather than clinical diagnosis or treatment

  • Aligned with NDIS capacity building goals, not GP mental health treatment plans

  • Integrates art, daily living skills, and community participation into one holistic approach

  • Focuses on functional outcomes — supporting participants to apply skills in their everyday lives

  • Can be adapted to suit individual abilities, interests, and goals

  • Complements (but does not replace) supports provided by psychologists or other clinical professionals

Art therapy at Thursday Child is about building skills, confidence, and independence, using creativity as a pathway to achieving meaningful NDIS outcomes.
